Tax number
What is a tax number?
Every case processed by the tax office is assigned a tax number. This is communicated to the taxpayer by the tax office. The number of digits differs between the individual federal states. My ELSTER requires the tax number to be entered according to the Standard scheme of the countries.
When will I receive my tax number from the tax office?
The responsible tax office usually assigns a new tax number when a tax return is submitted for the first time or after relocation upon notification of responsibility. A separate tax number can be issued for different types of tax.
Where can I find my tax number?
A sample notice is shown below. You can use a notice to determine the tax number applicable to this type of tax. The appearance of the notice may differ slightly depending on the federal state or tax type. The place with the tax number is marked in the image (top left, behind the word "tax number").
Note: The tax number is independent of the identification number and should not be confused with it.

Where can I apply for a tax number?
If the tax office has not yet issued you or your organization with a tax number, you have the option of initially registering with just an e-mail address. The creation of your user account can then be completed immediately, no letters will be sent. Based on this registration, you can then submit a questionnaire for tax registration. It is not initially possible to submit tax returns. As soon as the tax office has assigned you a tax number, you can activate all the functions of a fully-fledged user account.

Structure of a tax number
The table below shows the representation of a tax number in the standard scheme of the federal states and in the corresponding standardized federal scheme. The table can be used to convert a tax number into the desired format. In the case of a tax number from the state of Hesse, care must be taken to ensure that the leading "0" is not forgotten in the standardized state scheme.
The following designations are used when displaying a scheme: F = digit of the tax office number, B = digit of the district number, U = digit from the personal distinguishing number, P = check digit
